I know that I did, and hoping the same for all of you! This time of the school year is hard. It is the last long stretch of the year and the temperatures make it hard for the kids to stay focused all day. We will always be going outside for recess to get rid of the wiggles, and occasionally go out for reading or writing. If you have any extra clipboards, we would love to use them! Send them on in :) ! As always, I am happy to help in any way with questions or concerns. Please email me at cameron1.todd@cms.k12.nc.us and we can set up a conference.Cameron Toddhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08632494814688513884noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8881373678741154644.post-36727691674432493192012-03-25T16:07:00.002-07:002012-03-25T16:07:51.775-07:00Free books!
Cheerio’s Spoonful of Stories!

Cheerios®, through its Spoonfuls of Stories® program, has once again put six million free children’s books inside specially-marked cereal

boxes. We have just started clubs at Sterling. Our class has the pleasure of Mrs. Serkin coming in each friday to teach our club to our class. She is doing a "book and cook" club for our class. It is going to be awesome! A great way to extend a book and really dive into comprehension. She is aware of food allergies, so do not be alarmed.

Please bring in your box tops and any kind of plastic bags! We are working with Harris Teeter at a chance to win $1,000 for our school... just by bringing in a plastic bag! Lets work together and do this :)
I like a little change every now and again! I have added an important part to the kids "GO book." It is a sleeve with a poem of the week in it. It will always be double sided to save paper, but the focus is only one per week. This weeks poem of the week is "One Hundred." They are to read it aloud 5 times each night along with their nightly homework. This will help them a lot to build their fluency and express emotion as they read. Friday is optional recite day. They may choose to memorize the poem and sit in my lighthouse chair to recite to the class. This is their chance to really shine!

...Well, we have one week left until our Christmas vacation! The weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas seem to just fly by. I want to encourage each of you to continue to read, and write over break. The children have learned so much thus far and I don't want them "losing" what they have learned while the holidays are among us! So, please engage in reading with your child as well as enjoying time spent with your loved ones.

This Friday December 16th we will be having a 1st grade rotation of different holiday crafts. I would love if any of you could join in helping me make this a success. Please send a note with your child if you are interested in helping. I am not certain of the time yet, but it will most likely be before lunch. Email me, cameron1.todd@cms.k12.nc.us or send a note in.

I want to thank those of you who came to our "Moosical!" The kids looked awesome and I am so proud of them, you should be too. :)

Happy Holidays to you and your family!!Cameron Toddhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08632494814688513884noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8881373678741154644.post-81823192854708644222011-11-28T16:19:00.000-08:002011-11-28T16:19:34.465-08:00Where has the year gone?Good evening!

I can't believe Thanksgiving has come and gone and here we are approaching December! I am loving the cold! Be sure to wrap your little ones up in warm coats as the temperatures will be dropping. If you are in need of a coat, please email me at cameron1.todd@cms.k12.nc.us. and I will be glad to help you!

I have added a few pages to your childs "GO" book. Please take a close look at the sightword sheets that are in there. The words highlighted are specifically for your child to go over and practice. Once the highlighted words are mastered continue on to sheet 3 and 4. Making flash cards out of small pieces of paper are a fast, and easy way to practice often.

Continue to read each night. It is crucial that your child has that extra practice of reading and decoding at home as well as school. Do not tell them the word if they don't know what it is. Encourage them to use their "chunking out skills" that have been taught at school.

Thanks for supporting me in helping me teach your little one!

Stay warm,
Ms. Todd :)Cameron Toddhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08632494814688513884noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8881373678741154644.post-20148784432978167732011-11-12T18:10:00.000-08:002011-11-12T18:10:41.506-08:00Hope all of you have had a long and relaxing weekend!
Our sight words for this week will be:
(yes, all, were, she, me)

I have sent home a list of sightwords for first grade. Please keep them in your childs "GO" book. It would be a great idea for you to go over these often with your child. This will enhance their fluency and reading comprehension.
Starting this week we will have sight word tests each Friday, only on the words for the week. They will have to spell the word correctly and use it in a sentence.

Let me give you some ideas for practicing sight words :)

- Rainbow writing: writing the word over and over again but each time with a different color crayon
- Pyramid writing: for the word "have" you would write "h" on the top line, "ha" on the next line, "hav" on the one below that, and finally "have" on the last row.
- Use shaving cream on a plate and have your child practice writing the words in shaving cream
-Write the words on notecards and place them in various spots. The children can jump or hop to each word.
-Use the word in a sentence
-Play a matching game with the words on index cards (written twice) and flipped over so that the written side is down. They have a match when they pick up 2 of the same words
-Stamp their words
-Use a white crayon on white paper to write the word, paint over it with water color paint and the word will shine through
-Chalk
-PaintCameron Toddhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08632494814688513884noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8881373678741154644.post-87233913512393613422011-11-06T14:36:00.000-08:002011-11-06T14:36:25.679-08:00Happy November!Welcome, parents and guardians of my sweet first grade students! I am thrilled to finally have this blog up and running! My hopes are for this to be a tool for you to be able to see what is going on in our classroom, important information, and ways you can volunteer. I will update this each week. At the bottom of the blog you will "sea" what we are learning. I encourage you to read this each week and talk about it with your little one at home. If you have any suggestions or comments please leave me one! I am looking forward to hearing from you :).Cameron Toddhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08632494814688513884noreply@blogger.com0
